At the nanoscale, shape is not decoration. A platelet, wire, or dot can confine carriers differently, expose a different balance of facets, and assemble into a different collective structure.
This is one reason I enjoy working with colloidal nanocrystals: synthetic chemistry gives us a route from atomic-scale decisions to macroscopic optical behavior.
